Grants & Notables Update: September-October 2019

Over $3 million in grants awarded to faculty in Pathology & Immunology.

GRANTS

Cole John Ferguson, MD, Instructor in Pathology and Immunology, received a five-year $164,015 grant from The National Institutes of Health, entitled “Ubiquitin Signaling in Epigenetic Regulation of Neuronal Development”.

Chang Liu, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Immunology, received a two-year $300,000 grant from Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation, entitled “Depleting Antigen-Specific B Cells for Antibody-Mediated Graft Rejection”.

Jonathan Brestoff, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Immunology, received a five-year $700,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, entitled “Regulation of Innate Immune Cell Responses through Cell-to-Cell Transfer of Mitochondria”.

Dr. Brestoff also received a five-year $1,962,709 grant from the National Institutes of Health, entitled “Regulation of Innate Immune Cell Responses through Cell-to-Cell Transfer of Mitochondria”.

Mark Watson, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Immunology and Director, Tissue Procurement and Multiplexed Gene Analysis Laboratories, received a one-year $15,458 grant from the Foundation of National Institute of Health (FNIH) / PACT Cancer Moonshot Agreement, entitled “Biospecimen Tracking System Requirements Gathering for the Partnership for Accelerating Cancer Therapies (PACT)”.

NOTEWORTHY

Dr. Brestoff received the prestigious Medical Scientists Award — the 2019 Career Award for Medical Scientists from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Dr. Brestoff also received a National Institutes of Health Director’s Early Independence Award to study how the immune system regulates weight gain, with a goal of finding new ways to treat obesity beyond simply limiting food consumption.

George Wettach, MD, FASCP, FCAP, Associate Professor of Pathology and Immunology and Chief of Pathology SoutheastHEALTH, was recently awarded a page in SoutheastHEALTH’s widely distributed Photo Calendar for 2020. Twelve winners, each representing a month, were selected from over 300 images submitted by regional photographers. The contest was judged by an independent panel of experts in printing, design, and photography.”

Three faculty and one graduate student won the following awards for teaching in the 2018-2019 academic year. The awards were presented on October 24.

  • Erica Crouch, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Faculty of Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, and Course Leader of Sophomore Pathology Course, received the Professor of the Year award.
  • Brian Edelson, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Immunology, received the Distinguished Service Teaching award.
  • Ian Hagemann, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Pathology and Immunology and Associate Director, Selective (Surgical) Pathology Fellowship, received the Distinguished Service Teaching award.
  • Takahiro Ohara, MD, PhD, Post Doc in the Stappenbeck Lab, received the Teaching Assistant of the Year award.

Robert Schreiber, PhD, AM Bursky and JM Bursky Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Professor, Molecular Microbiology, and Director, Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Programs, has accepted the role of Interim Director, Division of Immunobiology.

Marco Colonna, MD, Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Robert Rock Belliveau, M.D. Professorship in Pathology, and Professor of Medicine,  and

Kenneth Murphy, MD, PhD, Eugene Opie First Centennial Professor of Pathology and Immunology, and HHMI Investigator in Pathology and Immunology have also accepted the roles of Associate Division Co-Chiefs.
