Research Interests

Our past research focused on the structure and function of collagenous carbohydrate-binding proteins known as collectins. We have systematically characterized the structure, function, synthesis, assembly, and secretion of Surfactant Protein D (SP-D) – a collectin that plays important roles in the innate pulmonary host defense against a wide variety of important bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. In particular, the laboratory has employed site-directed mutagenesis and crystallographic analysis to examine mechanisms of microbial pattern recognition, including interactions with the hemagglutinin of influenza A.
