The Digital Imaging Center is a joint resource of the Department of Pathology & Immunology and BJH. This Center specializes in digital imaging for clinical, teaching, and research applications and is keeping up with advances in this fast-moving area.
In addition to resources for digital pathology we also offer poster printing as well. The Digital Imaging Center currently provides resources for high-quality whole slide scanning including for teaching, archival, or deidentified sharing off-site. FAQS
- Air pockets under the slide cover could affect image quality. It could also require multiple attempts to achieve a good quality scan.
- Markings and writing near the point of interest could reduce the quality of the image. Try to make any markings along the edge of the slide.
- Dirt and fingerprints are the biggest culprits when trying to achieve a good quality scan. Wipe all slides before they are scanned to remove any dirt or fingerprints that may affect the scan quality.
- Chips, and scratches will result in a longer scanning process and may affect the overall scan quality. Slides that are cracked cannot be scanned.
- Overhanging coverslips could cause the slide to become jammed in the scanner. Trim excess coverslip off the slide to avoid this.
Slide delivery and methods will be discussed once your scanning project has been submitted to digital imaging. Our options for file transfer is WUPAX and BOX.
Scanning times vary depending on the slide quality, slide quantity, size of tissue, and the magnification requested. The turnaround time that can be expected will be 24 to 48 hours after receipt (Larger request will take longer). For more Information on slide scanning times, possible rush service, or other general scanning questions please email digitalimagingcenter@path.wustl.edu.
