The Division of Anatomic & Molecular Pathology integrates traditional light microscopy with advanced techniques such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and flow cytometry to accurately diagnose benign and malignant diseases. Supported by the exceptional research environment at WashU Medicine, the division plays a leading role in applied and basic science research.

The division benefits from collaboration with renowned institutions like Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center, and the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, providing diverse case materials. Faculty dedication, daily teaching conferences, and one-on-one sessions ensure comprehensive learning opportunities.

The Washington Manual of Surgical Pathology, a collaborative effort between faculty and trainees, addresses the practical needs of residents. The fact that the list of contributors to the manual includes not only faculty members but also a number of residents and fellows emphasizes that surgical pathology at WashU Medicine has always been a collaborative venture between faculty and trainees.

Residents completing the program are well-prepared for general pathology practice, with many opting for subspecialty fellowships offered by the division.

Surgical pathology at WashU Medicine significantly advanced with Dr. Lauren V. Ackerman’s 1948 appointment, shifting the focus from autopsies to the evaluation of surgical specimens, thereby modernizing the field.
