Research Interests

I am interested in discovering key elements in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases in the intestine. The focus of my laboratory is host mutations and interactions with the environment that alter intestinal epithelial function. We develop and characterize novel mouse models that have mutations in genes that have susceptibility alleles in human inflammatory bowel disease. We have developed methods of injury and repair in vivo as well as epithelial culture systems whereby we can manipulate the function of specific genes and test the effects of specific environmental factors. Our overarching goal is to understand combinations of genetic and environmental factors that affect specific epithelial cell function and thus predispose individuals to develop active intestinal inflammation.
