Research

The use of molecular typing techniques to determine the relatedness of strains involved in the clonal spread of bacterial diseases. This form of bacterial fingerprinting relies on the discriminatory power of a variety of molecular methods such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PAGE), random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD), repetitive sequence PCR (REP), ribotyping, and others. These methods help to determine the likelihood that strains of a particular microorganism are either related or unique. Further studies in this laboratory are concerned with defining the relationship between typing methods and their ability to segregate bacterial isolates into relatedness clusters. Currently, these techniques are being used to further define traints that distinguish between community-acquired and hospital-acquired strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
